Darcy’s Calendar Challenge for March 2015

The wonderfully talented Darcy Wilkinson runs a monthly calendar challenge here. I do hope you can find time to come and join in!

Here are the techniques Darcy wants you to use this month:

1.. Keep a part of the original picture and incorporate that into your design

2, Technique -  use a candle or wax crayon as a resist

3. Add a title, using letters or words cut from a magazine/leaflet in a ransom style.

4. Blog your calendar page and link up from March 1st 2015

I designed my own calendar and have printed onto copy paper as i want to see how good or bad the techniques we are asked to use work on plain copy paper.

For March I chose one of my backgrounds from DLP 2014 which already has the words ‘your day’ on it. Printed out two copies and cut them out as i am adding the finished pages to a journal and not using it as a calendar.

The reason for two is that i am going to cheat and mount the words so they look like a ransom note.

I managed to keep a little of the original picture but the crayon resist went terribly wrong. Think this was because i use Portfolio Pastels which react with water instead of using Crayola wax crayons.

Made the best of the problem but it doesn’t have the same definition i was hoping for.

Used stamps from my stash to add a border around the image and then cut out the words and mounted them onto copy paper then adhered to the page.

Above is the journal page i created, used some of the papers i had over from a recent workshop. Collaged the calendar image onto one of the pages of my mop up background journal, i really like how it has turned out.

So i had a play with the resist technique and i added a ransom style title which is the brief for March 2015.

I would like to enter this into the following Challenges:

Recycle, Re-Purpose & Re-Invent

Paper Artsy – Deconstruction

Hope you have enjoyed your visit today, looking forward to your lovely comments.

Thanks for dropping by.

  1. This is gorgeous Mo, and honestly, I never would have known that the background didn't turn out like you planned. I think it is stunning and really unique! Love the swirling colours and your words remind me of Scrabble tiles, fun!! Great page for March! hugs :)

  2. This turned out great, and no matter about the resist, because you ended up with a terrific page. As long as you enjoy playing and trying new things and experimenting then that's all that matters. x

  4. Superb end product Mo, I love your work! :o))

ps - I'm sorry you were sad about not having the chance to join in with my Anti Journal social experiment :( it's just that I wanted immediate results, please forgive :/
I was very lucky having such a lot of responses; I dreaded only having enough to fill about half a page, lol.
Have a great weekend :o) xox

  5. Well thought out "deconstruction"! I kind of like the soft resist, it's different but works just as well in your background.

  8. Any time I read that a challenge has recycle in it, I'm in LOVE. I am all about recycling and reusing what we have and what would normally go in the trash. This turned out great considering the products you used. I was really impressed with the finished calendar page.

  10. I would be so very pleased if I had created that background, so nothing to fret about, Mo! I have to say that the "recipe" for this challenge is quite exact, but you managed to pull it off perfectly! Lovely result!

  13. What a lovely happy accident. Sometimes the best art comes from those moments when things didn't come out the way we wish. Art has a life of its own we are only its keepers. Well done for getting March completed with a truly unique piece. Love it! Xx
