Alphabet Soup

Hi Lovely Followers!

Managed to create a mixed media page for the latest Artist Trading Post Challenge, Alphabet Soup. This is the first time i have entered an ATP challenge, all of the design team created wonderful and inspirational pieces so i just had to have a play.

P1080024

Visited their bricks and mortar shop last Saturday, i got a couple of the new Princeton Catalyst Tools, a Colour Bloom Spray called Precious Stone and a Silver Aladine IZink.

P1080021

Called next door to see the lovely Ecclesbourne Railway. We were served the best latte from a vending machine in the  Pullman Restaurant i have ever tasted, highly recommended place to visit!

Our journey to Wirksworth took us through hail, snow, sleet and the sunshine you see above, the weather turned out to be rather glorious, even for our return journey.

Alphabet Soup

My project didn’t flow, struggled with every bit of it but i hope you enjoy the images.

P1080025

Once again i used a lot of product, the new Catalyst wedge and spatula are fantastic, i will be adding to my collection. Easy to clean and they make using pastes over stencils so easy.

The above image is after i had sprayed the base with Precious Stone Colour Bloom spray and then sprayed over the TH Measured stencil with Shimmering White DecoArt Mister Spray.

P1080027

Used a TCW 210 number collage stencil over the top  of the sprayed background. I applied DecoArt Crackle Paste through the stencil using the Catalyst blade and then while the stencil was still in place i used the Catalyst Wedge over the top to add some shapes to the crackle.

When this was dry i sprayed Violet and Turquoise DecoArt Mister Sprays over the top, dried them and then added my new favourite TH product, Brushed Pewter Distress Stain.

The macro image shows the texture from the crackle paste and the very subtle colours of the Precious Stone spray and the DecoArt Misters. You can also see the lines the wedge left, i really like this effect.

P1080028

I am so sorry that the timeline of the project has gone from background to finished but i went back and forth to it over a few days and didn’t like what i was seeing so didn’t take too many pictures.

I did however enjoy the embossing of the metal tape,  the black paint over the top of the letters, rubbed back to give that aged look. Applying two different DecoArt Antiquing Creams, Patina Green and Raw Umber to add even more aging.

Using the new TH Mixed Media thinlits dies as stencils was wonderful, i added one of them to the bottom left hand corner over the top of some of the embossed and aged metal tape.

P1080029

Added three different washi tapes down the centre of the page, then added three stamped words from Stampotique and Tim Holtz.

I really dislike the flower i made using the Tattered Floral Bigz die, something wasn’t right i think it was the colours of the layers it didn’t match the rest of the style. Went ahead with it anyway.

P1080030

The centre is from an old jewellery necklace took apart. Still it doesn’t look right…

P1080031

I made some paper rolls from old medicine information sheets, i used one for the base of the flower, coloured it with Iced Spruce Distress Re inker and then some of the Silver IZink over the top, love the shine and one for the stem which i covered with the embossed metal tape.

P1080032

Macro of a couple of the metal covered letters.

P1080037

After leaving the page to sit for a couple of days i realised it was the white of the flower centre that was bugging me so i stamped over it with a new mini Finnabair stamp called Dot Grunge.

P1080038

Happy mail arrived this afternoon and my new Dylusions Sentiments stamp set Laugh ‘Till You Leak arrived. Used one of the sentiments on my page.

Hope you are not too disappointed in my Alphabet Soup, it came together very last minute. I might even add it to a piece of mount board, maybe that’s what’s missing! If i do will update the post.

Looking forward to your comments and feedback be it good or bad.

Thanks for dropping by.

  3. Wow, oh WOW, Mo. You really DID use a lot of products on this one. It shows, too. It is simply gorgeous and stunning.

So nice you got to see ATP's brick and mortar store, and the weather sounds like what we are going through right now, without the sun, of course.

    Beautiful, beautiful entry.

  11. I think this looks amazing and I would definitely mount it and display it! I love the textures and the ageing on it and ultimately I think the flower blended well with the other elements. Your sentiment is brilliant! In a way, isn't that what the flower is saying? Sorry if this sounds a little strange, but it seems to symbolise that by being itself the world around it has or the background, if you like, comes to complement it! Those tools sound great. I have 2 Catalyst tools, but I should like to acquire some more! xxx

  21. I just saw your comment about DLP and others. I didn't join DLP last year because I already had the calendar I was making and documenting at Kate's. I also thought the whole DLP thing was a bit too much for someone like myself, so I was glad when I found Journal 52, which promised I didn't have to buy anything, unlike DLP, which wanted a specific journal, washi tapes, etc.

I also miss Craft Barn's Q & L, but like you, the whole thing didn't appeal to me this year.

I sort of got roped into joining Claudine's APCs, even though I kept thinking I was out of my league. True to form, when I feel that way, I should NEVER join something I KNOW I don't have the products for. And, as I've said in the past, the process, not the product, should take center stage. I'll be SO glad when that challenge is over. And she acts like she's going to offer it again, too. Once I'm finished with the APCs, all I have to think about is Journal 52 and my monthly calendar. I feel like a weight will truly be off my shoulders when that happens.

Please don't be a stranger, because I LOVE your art, and want to see it. You are such an inspiration, even if I have no idea about half the products you have (grin).

  22. Not disappointed at all, in fact happy to see you use your stash and enjoy the process. Metal tape is one of my favourite techniques, it looks awesome with all the embossing and ageing. Great colours and your flower looks good to me!

  23. Wow, what a beautiful piece - the colours just shine through and I love the flower you made. Your background textures are fabulous, and I'm going to have to google a lot of the products you are talking about as I've never heard of them! I think it's gorgeous but if you're like me you'll never settle until it 'feels' right despite what everyyone else says!

  24. I love this Mo, but I know what you mean about feeling something isn't right and not being happy! The textures and colours are wonderful! BTW I think I may have misled you about my stamping - I have edited the post now as I realise it didn't read right - I used existing small background stamps to make the background! Jealous of your visit to ATP but with a railway next door I can probably persuade the old hub to take me one day!!! Hugs, Chrisx

  25. I too think you should love this but I also know how it is to feel that something just isn't you. (My ATP DT piece is an example). However, your fears really are unfounded in this case. The background you created is superb and I would have been happy with just that but you added to the beauty with your other details and you should be very happy with your creativity on this project. Thanks so much for joining us at ATP Exchange. Juliax
