Challenge 3 MMW - Vintage

Hi Everyone and welcome to our 3rd challenge at Mixed Media World.

This time the theme has been chosen by our Lovely Deborah Wainwright and she has chosen:

VINTAGE

Our sponsor for this challenge is Glitzcraft.

Sponsor - GLITZCRAFT

The prize is a £15 voucher to spend in their online store.

I must apologise for the pictures in my post, i have been poorly for the last couple of days with food poisoning and haven’t felt up to doing much.  The light has been dreadful today so the true colours of my project are not really shown.

Also i finished my project before taking any pictures which is really bad of me, as i usually take them as i go along.

I chose to make a Vintage message and key holder, a place to leave your bits and bobs when you come into the house instead of losing them.

P1080486

Started off by folding an old book (Bibliogami), there were so many pages that it automatically made a round shape.

The glass half marbles (from stash) have all been stuck onto book pages, cut out and then adhered onto the top of the holder. Each one has a specific word highlighted.

Took two old CD roms and painted them with DecoArt Chalky paint in Relic. Added a layer of script stamping then a layer of DecoArt Quinacridone Gold from their Media Range then sealed it using DecoArt Decou-Page Matt Glue/Sealer.

Added washers from stash onto both sides of the CD’s, stuck these with the Decou-Page glue, allowed to dry then glued the book pages between the CD’s.

P1080488

Made one of the larger Eileen Hull Scoreboard 3 cube dies to house the keys.

Cut out the larger cube then embossed all the pieces using one of the 8 x 8 Crafters Companion Embossing folders.

P1080487

Covered the inside with map Decoupatch papers from The Range using the DecoArt Matt Decou-Page Glue.

Next i added a number of the Distress Inks to the outside using make up sponges. Think i used Walnut Stain, Iced Spruce, Peacock Feathers, Spiced Marmalade, Barn Door and Dusty Concord.

P1080491

Mixed a little of the Dioxzine Purple Media Paint with DecoArt Crackle Paste, spread this through the Andy Skinner Stencil called Industrial and applied to all sides of the cube apart from the base.

Tried the DecoArt Sand Texture Paste for the first time, it is fantastic and has a great texture. Added a layer of Quinacridone Gold and Paynes Grey Media Line paints before adding a layer of DecoArt Carbon Black Antiquing Cream. Rubbed this right back as i wanted a hint of colour to age the purple stencilled words.

Hope you can see both the crackle and the sand paste textures, i added some DecoArt Metallic Lustres in Champagne Ice and Majestic Purple to add a little shimmer.

P1080497

For the mini clipboards i used a Tim Holtz Sizzix Bigz die called ATC and Corners. Cut out both the card and then used one of the Vintage papers from our other sponsor The Old Vintage Shop on Etsy. I posted how i made this paper here.

The mini clipboard shape is a movers and shapers die from Tim Holtz and Sizzix.

These have been stamped with the days of the week using a small alphabet set from The Range and a Sepia Versafine Ink Pad.

P1080498

The mini clipboard shapes have been coloured using Carbon Black, Red and Shimmer Turquoise DecoArt Misters. When dry i added a layer of the Decou-Page glue to seal the colours then added a layer of Quinacridone Gold Media paint to age them. I really love how they have turned out they look very rusty.

After the stamping was added i cut out some of the plastic that the dies are delivered in and cut out some more of the mini clipboard shapes, these have been adhered over the top to give them extra body.

P1080500

I LOVE creating backgrounds like these on the backs on my mini ATC’s/mini clipboards. The same inks used on the cube were used here except i used different techniques and added stencils from Glitzcraft into the mix.

Do you know that you can get your own bespoke stencils made to order from Glitzcraft? The one i have was designed by me and the lovely people at Glitzcraft had it cut and posted and i had received it within 5 days. Great service don’t you think!

The following colours were layered  up, Walnut Stain, Iced Spruce, Peacock Feathers and Dusty Concord, water was then flicked on them. Using a piece of tissue the water was dabbed off to reveal water blots. Then added a layer of circle stencilling using Peacock Feathers. Next sprayed again with water, let card dry for a few seconds then blotted off the water.

Next up was a layer of script stamping; used a very old stamp and Cornflower Blue Archival Ink. Next a final layer of Barn Door Distress Ink through a hexagonal stencil.

Dried with a heat gun then added a layer of Decou-Page Matt Sealer, found this really brought out all of the layers of colour.

The last little touch was to add one of the chevrons onto the back of the mini clipboard shape. these are the waste from Tim Holtz Frameworks Bigz Die called Chevron.

I do hope you managed to stay with me through all the images and the descriptions, well done if you did lol.

  10. So sorry to read you were sick. Believe me when I say how much I can empathize.

For being so sick, you sure created a gorgeous vintage piece. Wonderful art, and great coverage. Even though you didn't have step-out photos, i was able to follow along with your description. Hope you are feeling better, because this is one stunning entry.

  15. Wowzer, Mo! What a fantastically creative piece of art - the folded book is fabulous, and makes a great stage for your crackled box full of ATCs - magnificent colours and textures. I love the sand paste too - been getting very messy with it today (you'll see the results some time when I can get around to blogging them).
